Banana Spring Rolls Recipe (Turon) | Eating Pinoy

Turon also known as lumpiyang saging is one of the many popular snacks in the Philippines, they’re so easy and quick to make. This snack is made of thinly sliced plantains and a slice of jackfruit, dusted with brown sugar, rolled in a spring roll wrapper and fried.

For this recipe I couldn't find Saba bananas which are commonly used to make turon, so I used the big banana plantain. I kept everything simple and used just four ingredients (plantains, brown sugar and spring rolls wrappers).

Prep: 10 min
Cook: 5 min
Serves: 5

INGREDIENTS:
  • 2 big plantain banana (sliced lengthwise)
  • 10-12 spring roll wrappers
  • 1-1/2 cups oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • water
DIRECTIONS:
Working with 1 spring roll wrapper at a time, place wrapper at an angle on a work surface so it forms a diamond shape. Place 2 slices of banana covered with brown sugar in a horizontal line on the bottom half of the wrapper. Dip your fingers in water and run them along the edge of the wrapper to make them easier to fold. Then fold up the bottom corner over the filling to cover. Fold in the sides of the wrapper and roll up to enclose the filling, use a little more water to make the wrapper stick together.

Heat the oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat. When the oil is hot, add gradually 1/3 cup of sugar and the banana spring rolls a few at a time. Stir occasionally to cover evenly the spring rolls with the caramel. Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side or until crisp and golden. Remove and allow to cool for 10 minutes.
