“This simple gratin brings together a potato casserole and delicious ground beef. Super delicious and easy to prepare!”
INGREDIENTS:
- 500g ground beef
- 4 large potatoes, cut into slices
- 250ml (1 cup) milk
- 250ml double cream
- 1/2 tsp salt or to taste
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil
- 4 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 inch ginger, minced
- 1 medium size onion, diced
- 1 tsp salt or to taste
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika powder
- 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- a handful of fresh coriander leaves, chopped
- 1/2 cup canned tomato
- In a large pot combine milk, double cream, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp ground black pepper and 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon. Stir well then add in the sliced potatoes.
- Cook over medium high heat for exactly 8 minutes.
- Once done turn off heat and set aside for later.
- Meanwhile in a large frying pan or wok heat 3 tbsp of oil.
- Once hot add in chopped garlic and minced ginger. Fry for 1 minute.
- Next add in diced onion and fry for 2-3 minutes or until translucent.
- Add ground beef with all the spices (salt, paprika powder, cinnamon powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder) stir-fry for 4-5 minutes or until the meat turns brown.
- Next add coriander leaves, garam masala and canned tomato. Fry for another 10 minutes or until all the liquid has disappeared.
- Once done turn off heat and set aside.
Layering Time:
- In a large casserole add a layer of half of the creamy potato.
- Then top it with a layer of meat and then with the remaining potato and cream.
- Top everything with some grated mozzarella cheese. Cover with foil.
- Bake in a preheated oven over 180 degree C for 25-30 minutes.
- Then remove foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes or until the top is nice and golden brown and bubbly.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
